Now I'm pretty much writing full time, I can't live without coffee. God knows I've tried. I'm quite spiritual and spiritual people are always going on about quitting caffeine and getting energy from Source. Although I like the theory, in practice sometimes Source doesn't quite come through when you're on a tight deadline.
I've recently started co-working at Campus North, a short walk from Newcastle centre, which is great but I get bored if I'm in the same place for too long. Which is why I'm happy that Flat Caps Coffee is just next door. This sprawling, relaxing space which combines plant life with Mad Men style furnishings and trendy lighting is perfect for chilling out with a book, meeting friends or having an informal business meeting.
I'd seen some tweets about The Newcastle Coffee Festival and when I popped in for coffee today I realised that it starts on Wednesday! Joe has managed to get all of Newcastle's finest coffee venues together for its first ever coffee festival. As well as Flat Caps, Ouseburn Coffee Co, Hatch Coffee, Pumphreys Coffee, Laneway Coffee, Arch 16, BLK Coffee in Heaton and Pink Lane Coffee are all involved. Coffee addicts can buy a Disloyalty Card which entitles you to a free coffee at each shop during June (£15 until 30th June). If you visit all participating coffee houses, you'll win a prize! (Money raised from the sale of the Disloyalty card will be split between charities Newcastle Carers and Chicci di Cafe).
This isn't just about the black stuff though, there's also beer and wine tasting, food pairings, yoga, roastery tours and all sorts of events happening. Take part in Hatch's photo competition to win coffee and a cake for you and a friend. Always wanted to have a go at being a barista? Give it a go at Rington's Training Rooms. Want to improve your coffee palate? Don't miss the Europe vs UK vs USA cupping competition (Wednesday 3pm, free). There's even a latte art competition at Harvest Canteen in Jesmond (Wednesday 7pm).
